Abstract
Currently, in the German-speaking realm only few diagnostic instruments are available to assess functional communication. This paper discusses implications of the ICF on diagnostic procedures and gives an overview of various indirect (questionnaires) and direct tests (guided interviews, role plays). The Amsterdam-Nijmegen Everyday Language Test (ANELT) is the only standardized German-language instrument available to directly assess the pragmatic-communicative ability of persons with aphasia. It is only partly compatible with ICF guidelines and there are Pros and Cons with respect to its clinical application. At present, a combination of direct and indirect procedures provides the best possible approach.
