Abstract
The selfish brain theory describes the principles and algorithms of the allocation of metabolic energy to the brain and to peripheral organs. The paradigm puts the energetic needs of the brain into the center of the energy allocation system. The article gives an introduction into the theory, discusses research results and describes the implications for the understanding of the psychoneuroendocrinology of depressive disorders.
