Abstract

Purpose: The study concerns the question of whether patients of different age differ in anxiety prior to surgery. Method: In two surveys (N = 144; N = 168) patients prior to surgery completed a questionnaire concerning their mood. Heart rate and blood pressure were also assessed. This was done repeatedly. Furthermore, a physician rated the patient's mood. Patients were divided into four age groups (20-34 years, 35-49 years, 50-64 years, 65 -79 years). Results: There are no age differences with regard to anxiety in self-ratings and physician's ratings. Systolic blood pressure is increased in the elderly. Patient ratings and physician's ratings correlate only slightly. Conclusion: Prior to surgery, elderly patients are not a special risk group in respect of anxiety. Patient ratings and physician's ratings are independent sources of information.
