Abstract

Bacteria of the genus Acinetobacter is abundant and widespread in nature. They can be found in the environment (soil and water samples) and samples from human and animals. Among this genus, Acinetobacter baumannii complex, comprising of A. baumannii, A. nosocomialis, A. pitii (and A. calcoaceticus), are the most clinically relevant. The emergence of the Acinetobacter spp. are ubiquitous, the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains in clinical samples and causing human infections are a major concern. This chapter deals with an overview of the Acinetobacter genus, focusing on the clinically relevant A. baumannii complex and various typing methods with particular emphasis on next-generation sequencing (NGS) for molecular typing.
