A Stochastic Approach for Robust Listening Room Compensation

Jan Ole Jungmann, Radoslaw Mazur, Alfred Mertins

Abstract

The purpose of room impulse response (RIR) reshaping isto reduce reverberation and thus to improve the perceivedquality of the received signal by prefiltering the source signalbefore it is played with a loudspeaker. The optimization of aninfinity- and/or p-norm based objective function in the timedomain has shown to be quite effective compared to least-squares methods. There are, in general, two possibilitiesto improve the robustness of the equalizers against smallmovements of the listener and/or receiver; namely multi-position approaches or the utilization of a regularizationterm. Multi-position approaches suffer from the extensiveeffort of measuring multiple room impulse responses. Theperturbations introduced by small movements can be describedby a stochastic error term. However, only quadratic penaltyterms have been considered so far.
