The Center for Research on Inflammation of the Skin (CRIS) is a multidisciplinary research center focused on inflammatory skin diseases. The members of CRIS participate in 5 DFG-funded research consortia, including the Clinical Research Units (CRU) 303 and 170, the Research Training Group (RTG) 1727 and 1743 as well as the Cluster of Excellence (EXC) "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation" (PMI).
CRIS was established as successor organization of the Center for Autoimmune Blistering Diseases Research (CAIBR), which was solely dedicated to research on autoimmune blistering skin diseases.

The aim of CRIS is to build a world-leading multidisciplinary research center on inflamed skin diseases, in which clinical and basic scientists collaborate to study defined disease pathways, identify therapeutic targets, and translate these findings into clinical applications.

CRIS will communicate advances on diagnosis and treatment for inflammatory skin diseases to the public by organizing clinical and scientific symposia and closely collaborate with patient support groups. 

CRIS will focus on seven key thematic areas of inflammatory skin diseases:

• Genetics and Systems Biology
• Immunomodulation
• Imaging
• Diagnostics
• Cell therapy
• Translation into clinical studies
• Drug development

CRIS members recruit from the Department of Dermatology, the Department of Rheumatology, the Institute for Systemic Inflammation Research (ISEF), the Lübeck Institute of Experimental Dermatology (LIED), the Institute of Medical Biomedtry and Statistics, and the Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM).

As an institution of the University of Lübeck, CRIS closely interacts with the University Clinic of Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) merging preclinical research with clinical research, and patient care.

CRIS aims at developing new drugs for inflammatory skin diseases and to advance treatment of these diseases to the precision medicine level. The research of the CRIS is currently focused on pemphigoid diseases, ANCA-positive vasculitis, and scleroderma.
